But here comes the effort of thought.' It is easier to see the conditions in their separate; ness, to insist upon one at the expense of the other, to make antagonists of them, than to discover a reality to which each belongs. The easy thing is to seize upon something in the nature of the child, or upon something in the developed consciousness of the adult, and insist upon that as the key to the whole prob-a lem. When this happens a really serious prac tical problem - that of interaction - is trans formed into an unreal, and hence insoluble, theoretic problem. I don't mind the markings on the side and under words. It doesn't make it difficult to read. However, the scan is a poor quality, resulting in words that are faded beyond the point of being legible and about 75% of the letters 'c' and 'e' are not distinguishable.
Great book. It is as relevant today as it was during the turn of the century. Consider this book as a part of your studies on education.
I appreciate the way Mr. Dewey challenges the way I view children, not just my method of pedagogy. This book was helpful in reflecting upon how I view the purpose of education as well as how to guide my students to learning.
I used this book as a reference for my thesis. John Dewey's classic education theories are the foundation of much of today's school curriculums. I have a Masters of Education and I truly believe from actual classroom experience that the older methods are better. Back to basics would turn around the nation's failing school system. I recommend reading this for anyone who wants to learn essentials of teaching children so that they can understand and use what they are being taught.
